Pet Adoption Day - Sun, Sept. 11 – 11:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M.

Blackberry Wine Cake with Chateau Morrisette's Blackberry Wine

This recipe was shared with me by Lesli who is on our team here at the Inn after she saw a bottle of Chateau Morrisette's Blackberry Wine on the Inn's table. It is a yummy and easy recipe that I like to make for afternoon dessert here at the Inn. One guest liked it so much that he ate 4 pieces in one sitting! I'm sure that some of you talented chefs could easily convert the cake mix into the needed ingredients so that it would be a completely made-from-scratch cake. And of course, the Blackberry Wine from Chateau Morrisette is only wine to use!

Blackberry Wine Cake

1 box white cake mix
1 box blackberry jello
4 eggs
1 cup vegetable oil
1 cup Blackberry Wine

Preheat oven to 355°. (Yes, 355° not 350°.) Mix cake mix & jello together. Add in slightly beaten eggs, oil & wine. Pour into greased bundt pan and bake for 45-55 minutes. Remove from oven and allow to cool on wire rack. Invert on cake plate and drizzle with glaze.

Glaze:
2 cups confectioners sugar
1/2 cup blackberry wine

I'm thinking a slice of cake sounds really good about now. Guess I'd better head to the kitchen. :)

Weekend Grief Retreat to Be Held at Inn

This annual event will be held at the Mountain Rose Inn on April 15-17, 2011. The Inn, a Blue Ridge Mountains B&B, secluded on 100 acres along the Rock Castle Creek provides a peaceful setting for souls in need of a quiet, reflective space.

During this seminar, participants will use creative arts and the natural beauty of the property as supports in the healing of the whole person. Techniques will be taught that attendees can use to calm their emotions, focus their minds, and settle their spirits. Sessions will be held on Friday, April 15 beginning at 7:30 pm, all day on Saturday, April 16, beginning at 10 am, and Sunday morning beginning at 10 am. Session topics include It's Personal: Understanding Grief, It's Personal: Telling Stories, It's Personal: Unfolding at Your Own Pace, and It's Personal: Reinvesting in Life. Individual sessions with a grief counselor, massage therapist, Christian pastor, art therapist and victim's advocate will be available on Saturday afternoon.

Registration is limited. The cost to attend is $265 per person and includes all three days of group sessions, individual sessions and all needed materials. Meals (dinner on Friday & Saturday, lunch on Saturday and snacks) are available for an additional $60 per person. Participants may choose to stay at the Inn for the entire event. Queen bedded rooms are $100 per night for single occupancy and $115 per night for double occupancy. King bedded rooms are $120 per night for single occupancy and $135 per night for double occupancy. Walking Ghost Tours of Floyd, VA

What better way to spend a fall night than by going on a walking ghost tour by the light of an autumn moon. The following article, from the New River Voice, gives all the details about the tours available in Floyd, VA. Not only will you learn some of the history of the area, but you might just experience some thrills and chills along the way.

Walking Tours of Floyd
When the autumn chill comes over the hills of Floyd, it’s time to start thinking about the Floyd Ghost Tour.

The walking tours are led by 19-year-old Cameron Arie Woodruff or his 16-year-old sister, Coriander Woodruff. Despite their young age, they have been leading the Floyd Ghost Tour for three years, have 22 years of acting between them and are consummate story tellers.

“We often have Floyd folks taking their friends on the Ghost Tour. It’s a fun way to spend an evening and it’s a neat look at the history of the area.” said Cameron.

The walk starts at Black Water Loft and circles around the Old Jacksonville Cemetery, through the center of town, out to School House Fabrics, back past the Courthouse, Rakes Mansion, and back to the Loft.

The walk takes a little over an hour. Most of it is on sidewalks, but the beginning is on the uneven terrain of the cemetery, so bring your walking shoes.

New stories are added each year. Most of the ghost stories on the tour can be found in the book, Strange Tales of Floyd County, VA, available in Floyd at noteBooks and the Floyd Country Store.

No reservations are needed. $7 per person. Tours start at Black Water Loft, 117 S. Jazz on the Lawn

End-of-Summer Events at Chateau Morrisette Winery

As summer is winding down, take time for one last getaway to the Blue Ridge Mountains of southwest Virginia. We know that Chateau Morrisette Winery is a favorite place for many of our guests to visit all year long. It is one of our favorite places to! To celebrate the last of those long summer days, the winery staff has planned some wonderful events at the winery for September.

On Labor Day weekend, the winery is in full swing with a movie on the lawn and extra hours for dining in their fabulous restaurant. Here are the details.

September 4 - Cinema on the Lawn - Presenting a silver screen classic, "Rear Window," starring James Stewart and Grace Kelly, on the restaurant lawn. Once the sun sets, settle back in your chair with a big blanket and watch a classic on the big screen. Food and wine available. At $5 per person, this is a cheap date and very romantic! Bring your own seating. Movie starts at 8:30 p.m. Picnics, coolers or outside food and drinks are not permitted.
September 6 - Labor Day - The Chateau Morrisette® Restaurant will be open on Labor Day from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. The Winery and Gifts Shop will be open from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. and tours will be held at 11 a.m., 1 and 3 p.m.

Chocolate Art at the Mountain Rose Inn

Previous guests of ours here at the Mountain Rose Inn know of my deep love for chocolate. It's often on display during our four-course breakfast dessert course and afternoon snacks. What can I say but that chocolate is a passion of mine. It's dark, rich sweetness just makes any meal, any day so much better.

Naturally, I was thrilled when a recent guest offered to teach me to make chocolate butterflies. I wasn't a natural at free-form drawing with chocolate as you can see from the photographs of our impromptu class. But I did learn the basics of drawing or writing with chocolate. So after some practice, here is my first attempt at using my new-found hobby of chocolate art to decorate a bowl of chocolate covered strawberries for guests! What could be more fun or delicious! After all, with this hobby you can eat the projects that don't turn out so well.

Saturdays: June 12 & 26 - 9:30-2:00 - Take a guided five-mile hike into Rock Castle Gorge, and learn the stories of the ruins from a community that existed there for over 100 years. (Wear waterproof boots or old shoes for stream crossings). The trail is moderately strenuous. Bring water and a snack. Meet at the entrance to the Rocky Knob cabins. The hike will end at the Rt. 8 (CC Camp Rd.). Park Service will be able to shuttle drivers back to vehicles at the end of the hike, OR participants may set up their own shuttle ahead of time, or hike back to the Rocky Knob Cabins on their own.

Mabry Mill - Milepost 176

Demonstrations of Early 20th Century Blue Ridge Life - Experience a variety of traditional Appalachian crafts including spinning, weaving, basket making, chair bottoming, and blacksmithing. The mill is open daily.

Dinner Theatre and a Taste of Blue Ridge Folklore

Summer vacations at the Mountain Rose Inn in the Blue Ridge Mountains of VA are not complete until you have spent a day at Ferrum College located on Rt 40 between Woolwine and Rocky Mount, VA. This beautiful campus is home to the Blue Ridge Dinner Theatre and the Blue Ridge Institute and Museum.

The 31st season of delightful productions at the Blue Ridge Dinner Theatre begins on June 5. At the same time the Institute's focus adds a unique element to Ferrum College's modern academic programs." The current exhibit, "Rockabilly in the Commonwealth", explores the careers of rockers from the state of VA during the 1950s.

We bought the weekend elopement package and ended up staying an extra night!!! We have never had such hospitality and service! The room was beautiful and we recieved so many unanticipated extras! And the food was outstanding... my husband is a very picky eater and they kept us very well fed! A Superb Blue Ridge Hiking Trail

It's been said that there are hiking trails and then there are real hiking trails. The Mountain Rose Inn just happens to be located three miles from one of the best Blue Ridge Parkway Hiking Trails that there is.

The Rock Castle Gorge, a 10.8 mile loop, is known for it's beauty and serenity. The bottom trail of the gorge is located along the Rock Castle Creek. Beginning hikers can enjoy this meandering walk that follows the mountain stream. At the point that the trail begins to head upwards, beginners can turn around and retrace their steps for a 4 mile hike.

This trail did not earn the National Recreational Trail status for nothing. Experienced hikers will find the entire 10.8 mile loop to be a strenuous test. After completing the bottom part of the path, the trail then heads upward to the top of the Blue Ridge Parkway and the Rocky Knob lookout point. Completing the entire 10.8 miles will bring you back to the beginning of the trail in the Gorge.

In the springtime to early summer, nearly 200 varieties of wildflowers are visible along the trail area. The trail, which is also Site MSL07 of the Sweet Mountain Laurel loop on the VA Birding and Wildlife Mountain Trail, is known to birders for its large numbers of warblers, thrushes, and vireos.

So plan a getaway to our mountain inn and take advantage of this incredible trail. Not ready for the Gorge trail? Practice on one of our short hiking trails located on the Inn's property or just take a leisurely stroll along the Rock Castle Creek in the Inn's front yard.

And don't worry about lunch! We gladly pack picnic baskets for our guests who are interested in having a picnic along the trail or one one of our front porches.

Arts & Nature: Healing after Loss - Grief Seminar to Be Held at Inn

When people experience a significant loss, whether it is the loss of job, the loss that comes with a move, or the ultimate loss through death, every part of their being needs to heal. Arts & Nature - Healing after Loss provides concrete ways for hurting hearts to begin the healing process. This grief seminar will focus on healing the whole person - mind, body & spirit, through time spent in God's beautiful nature and an emphasis on dealing with grief through expressions in art.

This event will be held at the Mountain Rose Inn on April 11, 12 & 13. The Inn, a Blue Ridge Mountains B&B, secluded on 100 acres along the Rock Castle Creek provides a peaceful setting for souls in need of a quiet, reflective space.

Facilitating this event will be Dr. Delores D. Gulledge, PhD, FT, CCRT. Dr. Gulledge is an educator, a grief facilitator, and an expert in Thanatology, the study of death and dying. Her personal life experiences have motivated her to learn all she can about helping others who are experiencing great life losses. Currently, Dr. Gulledge travels the US leading seminars on grief management such as Hope & Healing Seminar, Turn Your Mourning Into Dancing, and Creativity Meet Grief. She also manages the C.A.R.E Team for the Richland County Coroner-Medical Examiner's Office in South Carolina and is a certified crisis response trainer.

During this seminar, participants will use creative arts and the natural beauty of the property as supports in the healing of the whole person. Techniques will be taught that attendees can use to calm their emotions, focus their minds, and settle their spirits. Sessions will be held on Sunday, April 11 beginning at 7:30 pm, all day on Monday, April 12, beginning at 10 am, and Tuesday morning beginning at 10 am. Individual sessions with a grief counselor, massage therapist, Christian pastor, yoga instructor and victim's advocate will be available on Monday afternoon.

The cost to attend the grief seminar is $265 per person and includes all three days of group sessions, individual sessions and all needed materials. Meals (dinner on Sunday & Monday, lunch on Monday and snacks) are available for an additional $60 per person. Participants may choose to stay at the Inn for the entire event. Queen bedded rooms are $100 per night for single occupancy and $115 per night for double occupancy. King bedded rooms are $120 per night for single occupancy and $135 per night for double occupancy. Tax is not included. A light breakfast will be provided for guests staying at the Inn.

A Winter Wonderland in the Blue Ridge Mountains

We are often asked by guests about how much snow we get here at the Mountain Rose Inn. Being that the Inn is located in the Blue Ridge Mountains, one would expect to see several snowfalls a year. However, until this winter, we've always answered, "very little" with sad faces. Well, this winter has certainly changed that answer! In Dec, we had a foot of snow the weekend before Christmas. It was beautiful! Last Fri, we received another 6 inches of snow. As I type, more snow is falling to add to the foot that came yesterday. It's been a remarkable winter so far and with the groundhog's prediction of 6 more weeks of winter, it could prove to be an incredible one. So enjoy the pictures. I'm going to play in the snow!!

Celebrating Christmas in the VA Blue Ridge Mountains

It's December 1st, and the Mountain Rose Inn is ready for Christmas!! As is our tradition here at the Inn, we had our decorating party yesterday. We are so blessed to be in a community with friends who help each other out. Each year, on the Monday after Thanksgiving, a group of friends comes to the Inn to help put up all the holiday decorations. We laugh, tell jokes, catch up on family news, listen to Christmas carols and well, work hard to get it all done. By the end of the day, the tree is up, the stairs are wrapped in garland & lights, the outside porches are decorated and the Inn takes on that happy, holiday glow. Best of all, we are refreshed from having spent a day with the good folks that we are blessed to call our friends.

Southwest VA Apple Chicken Cheddar Quiche Recipe

Here in the mountains of Southwest VA, apples are a main crop. Since our VA bed and breakfast is located in the middle of apple country, of course we have to serve several breakfast dishes that spotlight this wonderful fruit. This fall we have focused on a wonderful breakfast entree, Apple Chicken Cheddar Quiche. Now really, what could be better than sweet apples and tangy cheddar. Since so many of our guests at the Mountain Rose Inn asked for the recipe, we decided to post it for all to enjoy.

Apple Chicken Cheddar Quiche

By: Dora Jane Barwick

Serves 10

5 apples - Granny Smith is my preference
1 Tbsp cinnamon
1 Tbsp sugar
4 Tbsp Butter
4 chicken breasts
1/2 tsp cumin
1/4 cup olive oil
2 cups sharp cheddar cheese
4 eggs
1 1/2 cup heavy whipping cream
Salt & Pepper to taste
1 sheet puff pastry - thawed

Peel, core and chop apples. Melt 2 Tbsp butter in frying pan. Add apples. If apples are tart, add 1 Tbsp brown sugar. Cook on med-low heat until apples are tender. Stir in cinnamon. Remove from heat.

Dice chicken into cubes. Heat remaining butter and olive oil in frying pan over medium low heat. Add chicken and cumin. Cook until chicken is done. Remove from heat and drain.

Spray 9*13 pan with cooking spray. Roll out puff pastry in to 10*14 sheet. Lay in pan. Layer apples, chicken and cheese on pastry. Blend eggs, whipping cream, salt and pepper together. Pour over apples, chicken and cheese. Tuck down sides of dough if needed. Bake at 350° for 30-40 or until set and golden. Serve warm with extra cheese sprinkled on top.

Not a fan of chicken? Just omit the chicken from the recipe and have an Apple Cheddar Quiche instead.

The Mountain Rose Inn is delighted to present "A Weekend of Scottish Fiddling" November 6-8 with Master Fiddler Dr. John Turner.

Dr. Turner, the only ten-time winner on record of a National Scottish Fiddling Championship, has played a major role in the revival of interest in traditional Scottish fiddle music over the last three decades. As a recording artist, he is featured on seventeen recordings. On stage, radio and television, Turner has performed throughout the U.S., Canada, the U.K., Japan and the Middle East. He has performed for six U.S. presidents, Queen Elizabeth II, other members of Britain’s royal family and many other heads of state from around the world. He is the founder and director of the Jink and Diddle School of Scottish Fiddling, now in its twenty- sixth season. He performs regularly in Williamsburg, Virginia and across the U.S., teaches privately, conducts workshops and serves as an adjudicator for fiddling competitions.

This weekend of music at the Inn will begin on Friday evening, Nov 6, with a fireside three-course dinner in the Dining Room. Afterwards, Dr. Turner will present a concert, An Evening with John Turner, Scottish Fiddler, in the Inn's parlor. On Saturday, following the Inn's four-course breakfast, Dr. Turner will present the morning lecture A Brief History of Scottish Fiddling. Lunch will be served, and then Dr. Turner will present the afternoon lecture Scotland and Virginia in the 18th Century. There is plenty time on Saturday afternoon for viewing the fall foliage and enjoying dinner at one of the fine dining establishments in the area. Dr. Turner will give a brief concert, New Tunes in the Traditional Scottish Style - Compositions by John Turner and/or His Student, on Saturday evening.

We are delighted to post the following news article for you! We have always enjoyed the many birds on our property and are thrilled to be recognized by a national magazine for having a birder friendly B&B!

Birds & Blooms, North America's #1 bird and garden magazine, has named the Mountain Rose Inn as one of the top ten B&B destinations in North America for birders. The Mountain Rose was the only VA B&B to be chosen for this honor.

In its October/November 2009 issue, the national magazine recognized that B&Bs not only provide havens of peaceful rest but that they are often located in great natural settings and provide destination vacations for birders interested in spending their time away watching nature at its best.

The Mountain Rose Inn, located in the Southwest Virginia Blue Ridge Mountains, is nestled along the banks of the beautiful Rock Castle Creek and is secluded on 100 acres of forestlands. Innkeepers Mike & Dora Jane Barwick have used the Inn's spacious porches, creekside hammocks, Adirondack chairs and benches to create a spectacular front-row seat for watching the birds as they go about their daily activities.

Several hiking trails have been developed on the Inn's property to give better access to the hardwood forests and creekside habitats that exist. While hiking along the wooded trails, birders may spot a scarlet tanager, hooded and Kentucky warblers, and Acadian and great-crested flycatchers. The pileated woodpecker and the barred owl also make their homes on the Inn's property. A local bluebird monitor has a box on the property where bluebirds routinely nest. The Inn has many bird feeders, hummingbird sippers, birdhouses and bathing areas on the property. Not only is the Inn's property attractive to birds, but the summer wildflowers on the property attract cabbage white, orange sulphur, eastern tiger and spicebush swallowtails and great spangled fritillary as well as large number of skippers. Along the creek such treasures as the spring peepers, green frogs and salamanders may be found.

To celebrate the diversity of the many varied natural resources in the state, Virginia created the first state-wide program in 2003 of its kind - the Virginia Birding and Wildlife Trail - a trail that links wildlife viewing sites throughout the state. The Mountain Rose Inn is Site MSL10 on the Sweet Mountain Laurel Loop of this trail and is adjacent to the 600 acres of IC Dehart Park listed as Site MSL11.

The Inn is also located within 20 minutes of Rocky Knob outlook on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Every September, area birders gather at this location to watch the spectacular hawk migration, where 789 broad-winged hawks were seen in one day in Sept 2008. Fall Is in the Air

It is the first day of September and here in VA, we are seeing the very first signs of fall. Out the back window of the Inn, I have noticed that the redbud tree is just starting to turn yellow and drop some of its leaves. How interesting that the tree that gives us the first color in spring – those glorious reddish purple flowers – also gives us the first taste of the wonders to come during autumn.

The weather is also signaling the change of season. Already the humidity is dropping, and night temperatures are dipping to nippy numbers.

I am viewing the arrival of Fall with mixed emotions this year. It has been such a wonderful summer – mild temperatures with plenty of rain that gave birth to a lush green landscape and healthy flower gardens filled with colorful blooms and butterflies. But I know from previous years how incredibly delightful fall can be in our Southwest VA mountains.

So here’s to the coming of fall with its gold and red painted woods; bright, sunny days and brisk nights; pumpkins in the fields; and crisp apples that are turned into kettles of apple butter.

Red Hats and Purple Attire... Oh My!

As you can see, a vision in red hats and purple attire visited us today! If you can't guess - the Stuart Chapter of the Red Hat Society came for lunch and a tour of the Inn. What a delightful group of ladies they are.

Having them in the Inn reminded me of my college days. One of the girls on my dorm floor had the poem "Warning" by Jenny Joseph posted on her door. It became a part of my day to stop, read it and laugh. The poem, which is a humorous reflection on the desire to do whatever comes to mind but not being able to b/c of society's rules, begins with:

When I am an old woman I shall wear purple
With a red hat which doesn't go, and doesn't suit me.

What a concept - to live life just as we want to!!

It was a pleasure to see these 13 ladies living it up and enjoying themselves here at the Mountain Rose. They laughed, they joked and they had a good time. They were an inspiration to me.

Great Seafood in the Mountains?

Mike & I are lovers of great seafood. Being from South Carolina, we are use to taking quick trips to the beach for a delicious seafood meal or having those wonderful low country shrimp boils for a get-together with friends and family.

Since moving to the Inn, we have missed having a place to go to for a great seafood meal. The fried shrimp platters in local restaurants just don't quite hit the spot - even though they are good.

So we were delighted to find a fantastic seafood option that has started recently in our area. Niblicks Restaurant at The Clubs of Olde Mill is offering a delicious seafood buffet every second Saturday night. Seafood chowder, fresh salads, fruit and cheeses, smoked salmon, boiled shrimp, crab cakes, crab legs, salmon en croute, oysters on the half shell, prime rib and luscious desserts are just some of the offerings.

The food is worth the trip (an easy and scenic 40 minutes from the Inn) but coupled with the beautiful setting, it is a marvelous way to spend a Saturday evening. The Clubs of Olde Mill is a magnificent resort stretching over 800 acres of beautiful rolling hills, soft cool valleys, and a 54 acre lake with streams trailing all throughout the golf course. Niblicks Restaurant is located in a prime spot overlooking the lake and golf course with the mountains in the distance.

So plan a trip to the Mountain Rose Inn and while here, save a night for a trip to Niblicks and enjoy some wonderful seafood!

What a View! Buffalo Mountain Natural Area Preserve

Mike & I had some free time on the Sunday evening of Father's Day, and so we decided to hike Buffalo Mountain Natural Area Preserve. What an incredible place it is. The path to the summit (shown above) is shaded and just beautiful with trees, bushes and rocks of different types.

The one mile hike to the top is moderately strenuous. (ok, for me - very strenuous! But Mike walked it with no problem.) When we reached the top, it was worth every bit of the trek! The 3,971 feet elevation and 360° view made it seem like we were at the top of the world. What a marvelous bit of God's creation right here for us to enjoy.

If you are planning a trip to Southwest VA and have the least bit of interest in outdoor activities, then this is one hike to put on your to-do list! I know we're planning to return and take a picnic lunch to enjoy while taking in the views!

Remembering a Special Dad

Since Father's Day is this Sunday, I wanted to tell you about my Dad, Tony Elliott, whom I lost this past April to an aggressive form of lymphoma. I can think of no better way to celebrate what will be bittersweet day for me than by sharing a little bit about him.

As the baby of my family and the only girl, I was always a Daddy's girl. (Mike says more than a little spoiled! - but I think I was just well-taken care of!!) As every little girl believes, I had the best Dad in the world. But I really did have a precious Dad. I have numerous memories of him taking time for me. He read Mother Goose stories to me as a child. (He got so tired of that one book he made a tape of it for me which I have to this day.) He taught me to ride a bike and went with me on afternoon rides on our farm.

He took me on the chair-lift at Gatlinburg, TN every year on our family vacation. He taught me to drive a 5-speed, a truck (pulling and backing a loaded grain wagon) and a tractor. He took me to high school football games long before I could drive, and he wasn't a football fan - I was. After I married, Dad still looked out for me - repairing a house window that I had broken, building a cabinet when I needed (wanted) it, and so much more.

In his obituary, my brothers and I wrote that Dad was a Christian first and foremost. It's a true statement. Dad worked as a farmer and served as minister of the Gospel, but he lived as a Christian. That example of a Christian, godly life is my most precious memory of my Dad. His life and ministry greatly influenced my faith in Jesus Christ that began as a child and continues today.

Once Mike & I moved to the Inn, I didn't get to see Dad as often, but several times Dad was able to come spend a week or so here with us. Some of you may have met him. He loved to put puzzles together so there was always a puzzle out at the end of the Inn's kitchen table that he worked on while he was here. He enjoyed the Inn's grounds and went for walks each day. One of my favorite memories is Mike taking Dad for a ride around the Inn's property on the 4-wheeler. It just delighted Dad to do this and of course it is now one of my favorite pictures from our time here at the Inn.

I am thankful to have been blessed with such a special father. Thanks for letting me remember him in this way.

A Healthy Dark Chocolate Alternative

Mike & I have decided that we really do need to start eating a little healthier. Well, I'm not one to give up chocolate completely so I started attempting substitutes for one of my favorite dark chocolate oatmeal bars. Here's what I came up with. They are guest-approved and are pretty good for being low sugar, no fat and no cholesterol.

Healthy Oatmeal Dark Chocolate Bars

1 ½ cups date sugar (found in health food stores)
1 cup unsweetened applesauce
2 tbspns molasses
2 tspns vanilla
2 eggs (or the equivalent of egg substitute)
3 cups quick cooking rolled oats
1 cup wheat flour (unbleached)
1 tspn baking soda
1 tspn salt
¾ cup chopped walnuts or pecans
2 cups dark chocolate chips

Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease 13x9 inch pan. In large bowl, blend sugar, applesauce and molasses together. Beat in eggs one at a time. Add vanilla. Stir in oats. Sift flour, baking soda and salt together and stir into oatmeal mixture and blend well. Stir in chips and nuts. Spread in greased pan. Bake at 350°F for 20-25 minutes or until light brown and center is set. Cool slightly before cutting into bars.

The VA Covered Bridge Festival - Woolwine, VA

Patrick County, where the Inn is located, is the home of 2 of VA's eight authentic timber covered bridges - Jacks Creek Covered Bridge and Bob White Covered Bridge. Both of these bridges are located within 5 miles of the Inn and are ruggedly beautiful examples of a very few landmarks that are preserved today.

Every June, Woolwine hosts the VA Covered Bridge Festival to commemorate these wonderful pieces of history. The festival includes live bands, numerous artists and craftsmen exhibiting and selling their products, and food vendors. There will be wagon rides, tractor pulled hay rides and antique car rides providing travel from one covered bridge to the other. For more information, visit the VA Tourism site.

New Birds at the Feeder

We are enjoying the return of various song birds to the area. It is delight to see several Indigo Buntings and Rose-Breasted Grosbeaks feeding out the Inn's feeders. What beautiful, colorful birds these are.

This is a picture of an Indigo Bunting that Mike rescued from one of the Inn's feeders last year. He survived and went merrily on his way after a few moments of rest in Mike's hand.

So plan a trip to the Mountain Rose Inn. Our six porches are great places for your birding pleasure.

Updates, Updates!

There has been a great deal of activity here at the Inn over the past two months. This time of year is always exciting because Mike & I spend much of our days updating rooms here at the Inn so that everything feels fresh and new for our guests.

This year we focused on updating two of the Inn's guest rooms. The first was Joe's Fishing Place. We've always loved the fishing theme but wanted to update the room with a fresh coat of paint, new colors, linens, etc. Here are the pics!

The second room to receive a makeover was the Pride of VA. Our new hand carved canopy bed was an exciting find for this room update.

As a part of our additions and for our guests' comfort, we added coffee pots and Ipod/CD/Alarm Clocks to every room. All rooms now have wooden blinds that are much easier to work. Also, our assistant innkeeper, Carl, handmade beautiful wooden lap desks for every room.

What a difference a few weeks of work made. So come for a visit. Experience our updates for yourself.

Here Comes the Bride

One of my favorite parts of being an Innkeeper is getting to participate in the different celebrations that occur here at the Inn. From 50th anniversaries to babymoons, family reunions and honeymoons, these celebrations are all special to me because of the tenderness of feeling that is evident. Granted, most of our guests are new to us when they come through our door, but the sense of celebration, of accomplishment, of excitement is the same. It's a special occasion for them, and we are honored to play a part.

Recently, Mike & I have been able to enjoy several small intimate weddings held here at the Inn. I wrote about the first one held on Valentine's Day. Since then, we've had two more, and they have both been very special occasions. How sweet it is to see two people who are deeply in love commit to each other for the rest of their days. Thought you might enjoy a few pictures.

A Guest Favorite For You

After sending out the last edition of The Innsider, I received several requests for the recipe for the Inn's cream of pear soup. This recipe is an original of mine that I love to fix for guests on warm, sunny days. So here it is.

Chilled Cream of Pear Soup

Ingredients

7 ripe, juicy pears

1 can white grape peach juice concentrate

1 8 oz carton French Vanilla Cool Whip

1/2 teaspoon nutmeg

1/3 cup sugar

fresh mint leaves

Directions

Peel, halve and core pears. Place juice concentrate (still frozen), Cool Whip, nutmeg & sugar in blender. Blend until smooth. Add pears. Blend until desired consistency is reached. Serve chilled in small glass bowls. Garnish with fresh mint leaves. Homemade sweet bread or muffins on the side add just the right touch.

I have several variations of this recipe that I use depending on what fruit is in season. Our guests particularly enjoyed this Cream of Strawberry version that I served last spring with fresh strawberries from the Inn's patch.

Waiting for the Hummingbirds

"Walking in a Winter Wonderland"

As a child growing up in South Carolina, I longed for snowy days. They were so few and far between that to get a real snow was a treat, a delight, a joyous occasion to be celebrated. I've not lost that sense of wonderment when snow starts to fall. Its just an amazing sight to me.

After a relatively mild winter here at the Inn this year, we have finally had a marvelous snow today - that's right, March 1st and we're just getting our first true snow of the winter.

What an incredibly fun day we've had. After our last guest checked out this morning, we declared a snow day at the Inn and went out to play. At Carl & Carol's house (our assistant Innkeepers), there is a great hill for tobogganing. It's an exhilarating feeling to fly down a hill on a sled. With Mike pulling or riding us back up the hill on the four-wheeler, what fun! After thawing out with hot chocolate and chocolate chip cookies, we made plans for a snow dinner to celebrate. Tonight, several of our friends all gathered at Carl & Carol's for an impromptu dinner with maple snow for dessert.

All in all, I'm a very happy girl tonight!

A Special Valentine's Day

I've always been a fan of Valentine's Day. Call me silly, but I think its a great idea to have a set day that reminds us to tell loved ones just how much they do mean to us. So it is a great pleasure for me to celebrate this holiday here at the Inn with a house full of couples all sharing their tender feelings with each other in their own special ways.

This Valentine's Day was especially sweet for me. A couple who had spent the '08 Valentine's weekend at the Inn returned to us for their wedding. It was a beautiful, intimate ceremony that made me smile over the memories of mine and Mike's wedding. As I turned down beds that night for our guests, it seemed to me that this lovely house that we live in with all of its history of happy couples sighed with contentment at the end of such a love-filled day.

A Winning Recipe

Recently, ILoveInns.com hosted a contest for the top ten most romantic recipes served in B&Bs. So I decided to give it a shot and enter one of my recipes - Delectable Strawberry & Dark Chocolate Stuffed Pancakes. Yes, I am a chocolate lover - even first thing in the morning! I was delighted to find out this week that my recipe, while not winning first place, had been chosen as one of the staff top-ten favorites in this contest.

A Guess - Three Weddings and a Funeral?

No, it's not three weddings in one day, and it's not often that we have three brides at the Inn at one time. These three beautiful brides are part of my family. They spent a weekend here and brought their bridal gowns for the purpose of having portraits taken at the Inn. We thought it was a marvelous idea!

Celebrating Christmas at the Inn

Christmas is one of my favorite times of year and is even more so since we moved to the Inn. There is something so special about decorating an older home. The Mountain Rose has always had character to me and at the holidays, with all the lights, greenery and ribbon, it just seems to shimmer and glow with its happiness.

We were delighted to have a group from the Roanoke County Parks and Recreation tour the Inn during Christmas. After the tour, we treated them and ourselves to a yummy dessert buffet.

A special treat for us this Christmas was the visit of members of the Whitlow family. During the 1940s and '50s, Mr. & Mrs. Joe DeHart (the original owners of the Mountain Rose) decided to move to their daughter's home in Stuart, VA. At that time, they rented the Inn to the Whitlow family for several years. It was wonderful to have the descendants of this family visit with us and tell us tales of what the house and property were like during that time.

So the warmest of wishes to you and yours for a very Merry Christmas.

I Found My Thrill on Blueberry Hill (Cliche but True!)

It's the time of year here in Patrick County when the last luscious crop of blueberries is coming in at the Blueberry Hill in Patrick Springs, VA. This family-owned organic blueberry farm is one of the most amazing blueberry places I've ever picked at. These aren't blueberry bushes - these are blueberry trees and for the most part are 6 feet and taller. Incredible and loaded, loaded this year with plump, juicy blueberries.

Since the season began in late July, Mike & I and our assistant Innkeeper, Carol, have made several trips to pick for our own pleasure and for stocking the Inn's freezer for all those stuffed blueberry pancakes we prepare as a part of the Inn's four-course breakfast. Carol, being a wonderful cook, has been making the most delicious blueberry pies that I have ever tasted. So I thought you might enjoy having her recipe as much as I do.

Blueberry Pie

You will need one double crust pie recipe or use a store bought one though homemade is ever so much better.

Line 9 inch pie plate with bottom pastry.

Preheat oven to 400.

Combine
4 cups fresh (or frozen) blueberries
3/4 to 1 cup sugar (depending on how sweet your berries are)
4 Tbsp flour
1/2 tsp grated lemon peel
dash of salt
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp nutmeg

Fill pie shell with blueberry mixture. Sprinkle with 1 tsp of lemon juice. Dot mixture with 1 Tbsp of butter. Place and adjust top crust. Brush with milk and sprinkle with sugar. Bake at 400 degrees 35-40 minutes.

Our Entertaining Hummingbirds

All summer here at the Inn, our guests and we have greatly enjoyed the antics of the hummingbirds feeding at the feeders on the front porch. Mike shot this video one recent evening when the hummingbirds were zooming around and having their evening meal. I bumped the audio up so that you can hear the squeaking from the birds fussing with each other over who is going to feed next. Sorry for the humming noise in the background.

The Friday Night Jamboree – A Great Tradition

Every Friday night, and I mean every Friday night, no matter the weather, the road conditions or the state of the world, the Floyd Country Store’s Jamboree happens. It is the place to be in Floyd, VA on a Friday night, and there is no other place like it.

The Country Store itself first opened in 1910 as a general store and hardware store. In the early 1980's the Friday Night Jamboree began in the form of a local bluegrass holding practice sessions and locals just stopping by for a bit of music. Since then, this wonderful tradition as grown to be one of the major venues of bluegrass music in VA.

A recent visit to the Jamboree reminded me of what a wonderful tradition this weekly event is. Up and down the streets of Floyd, bands gathered to have jam sessions just for the pure pleasure of making music. Inside the Country Store, local folks and visitors to the area gathered to hear some of the best bluegrass bands around. Up front, the dance floor was filled with folks flatfootin, two steppin’ and just bobbing in time to the music.

One of our recent guests at the Inn came back and was telling me how amazed she was at this small piece of Americana that is left. She had seen a family (that would be parents and their teenagers) come in, get some ice cream and play checkers and cards in their booth while listening to the music. Now really, how often does that happen in modern America?

Hummers, Hummers & More Hummers

As summer progresses, the hummingbird collection at the Mountain Rose Inn continues to grow. These beautiful little birds are whirring all along the front porch in their hurry to get to the feeder for that next sip. Their antics as they attempt to keep other birds from feeding are quite funny to watch. One recent evening, we counted 14 at one feeder. Guests sitting on the front porch are treated to the faint buzzing noise that their wings make and the many squeaks of outrage that come when one finds that some other feathered friend has taken his place at the feeder. What a delightful way to spend a summer afternoon.

Celebrating the Fourth in Grand Style

We continued our Summer Holiday Weekend Celebrations here at the Inn this past weekend with our Fourth of July bash. What a grand event it was!

Our guests were a delightful group who seemed to click with one another instantly. Throughout the entire weekend, they enjoyed time together at the Inn as they watched sunsets on the front porches and shared wine, cheese and good conversation in the Inn's parlor. On the night of the Fourth, we cooked a shrimp & grits dinner for everyone. After a dessert of homemade ice cream and banana pudding, we all enjoyed a fireworks display on the Inn's front lawn.

Our guests spent the rest of the holiday weekend touring the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains, visiting the local wineries and relaxing in the Inn's swimming pool. As everyone checked out, we felt that a part of our family was leaving after a delightful holiday weekend visit. We are certainly looking forward to our Labor Day Weekend celebration!

An Incredibly Good Dessert - Any Time of the Day

I stumbled across the foundation for this recipe in a Southern Living magazine last year. A few tweaks and additions later and it is a guest favorite. Talk about pure indulgence...

Dark Chocolate Chimichangas in a Raspberry Sauce

Ingredients

4 soft taco shells
2 Hershey’s Dark Chocolate Bars
1 jar of Seedless Raspberry Jam
1 cup of Raspberry Syrup
2 Tbsp Corn Starch

Put ½ chocolate bar in each shell. Fold shell around bar. Put in freezer for 30 min. Heat 1 to 2 inches of olive oil in frying pan over medium heat until hot. Fry chimichangas until golden brown on each side.

Blend jam & syrup until smooth. Heat mixture to a boil. Mix cornstarch and cold water to make a thin paste. Add to jam mixture and heat until thickened to desired consistency.

Serve chimichangas topped with raspberry sauce & whipped cream.

A Favorite Recipe Site

I am often asked by our guests where our recipes come from. A good many are located inside both mine & Mike’s heads which do make them quite difficult to share. However, we also have a favorite site for searching for new recipes and new ideas. It is www.allrecipes.com. When I was first learning to cook, I found this site to be invaluable because all of the recipes are rated by ordinary, everyday cooks like me. Not only are the recipes rated but users of the site will leave comments and suggestions for ways to improve and/or change a recipe. If a recipe has a rating of 4 stars or better, then usually it is a great recipe. So give it a try and see what delicious food comes out of your kitchen tonight!

A Favorite Breakfast Entrée

Since coming to the Inn, I have created various breakfast entrée recipes. One of my favorites, and a favorite of our guests, is the Italian Sausage Egg Bake with Tomato Sauce.

In December 2007, the Cooking with Paul show was filmed here at the Inn. Paul Farrar is a favorite local chef, and his cooking show runs on several of the area's cable stations. We had a great deal of fun with Paul and enjoying having him and his crew here with us for a morning. So if you're interested in seeing how this recipe is made, here you go. One warning - I'm no TV personality! :)

So the next time you are cooking for a crowd, here’s a great recipe that’s sure to please.

Italian Sausage Egg Bake

The Mountain Rose Inn

Makes 4 servings

1 can Italian diced tomatoes
1 cup mild Italian sausage (already cooked & chopped into small pieces)
3/4 cup Italian shredded cheese blend
salt & pepper to taste
1 tsp Italian seasoning
8 eggs
¼ cup half-n-half
½ cup ricotta cheese

Preheat oven to 350°. Spray 8*8 pan with Pam. Layer 2/3 cup of tomatoes (drained), Italian sausage, Italian cheese, salt, pepper and Italian seasoning in pan. Blend eggs, half-n-half, and ricotta cheese together. Pour into pan over Italian sausage mixture. Bake for 30 to 40 minutes until center is firm and top is brown.

Puree remaining tomatoes with salt & pepper to taste & heat through. Serve over warm egg bake and top with Italian cheese or Parmesan cheese and a sprig of fresh rosemary or Italian parsley.
